The Trick Is Coming Home Again

Ollie growled lowly, and felt his step mother smack the back of his head. "I said, hold still."

"You're the one who keeps whacking me."

The Trick Is Seeing What's Under The Skin

Lu Zeitan's picture

Oliver had been in that cell so long, he’d almost forgotten about mirrors.

It was easier than he’d thought. When you’re an animal, you only care about a few things, and you forget anything that doesn’t have anything to do with food or shelter. By the time the potion had finally come to him, he cared for little more than what his next meal would be, and how best to kill the jailor.

He’d forgotten all about mirrors, until he looked into one the next day.

It was dark and cold that night on a Kun-Lai mountaintop, and the snow was already flecked with drops of red.

For Lu Zeitan, Hallow's End was already an interesting night, and he'd only just fallen asleep.

Desperado

"Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?"-Don Henley, "Desperado"

People close to Lu were familiar with his past. They knew, inside, he was conflicted, always at battle with some darker thing lurking inside. It was a blackened heirloom, a lineage of sin made whole in the warm, brilliant soul of the Pandaren. It was the one blemish on the otherwise spotless radiance that was the caring heart of Lu Zeitan. It sat there, steaming and fuming, bubbling like the Sha, angrily lashing at that which carried it. Any day, he could have eradicated what he felt as guilt. He could have obliterated that mark of sin and shame that followed him around like a specter, long fingers clawed and curled, waiting for a chance to strike and rip the wardancer to shreds. He could have done away with it, and told himself it wasn't his fault his family was dead, that their line was one of vicious and callous acts, and that he needn't worry of following the same path, being a bastard of his mother and all.

He could have, but he didn't. Lu wasn't the kind to bury something, to leave it behind. Call it sentimentality, or call it stupidity; Either way, Lu carried that sin as a reminder of what he could, one day, become. It had taken all of one wrong step to start the dark path his ancestor had set out before his family line, and the rest had happily followed suit into the abyss. Lu was a clean slate, a fresh start for the name, and he would be damned if he let whatever generation was to follow become like him.

That, he realized, was why the nightmare came one Hallow's End night.

The troll fell to his knees as the towering Kor'kron forced him down, hands behind his head, as his eyes took in what might be the last thing he ever saw.
