Head filled with information about goblins and with a mission to be public around town, you decide to pay a another visit to Sandpoint's oldest citizens, this time unburdened with your friends who, while nice to have around, know little of your culture. Before long you stand before the ancient house, which looks much the same as it did the day before, aside from the pie cooling on the windowsill off to one side.

Melu knocks on the door.

Melu knocks on the door. While there are plenty of other things she could, should be doing, this seems equally important. If nothing else, it was perhaps expected. Good reasoning.

The bard waits patiently at the door, hands clasped.

You hear a voice call out

You hear a voice call out from inside.

"Just a moment!"

After about a minute the door is pulled open by Koya, who smiles when she sees you.

"Well hello dearest! Please, come in, the tea's still hot and mother is freshening up. Come in!"

((MUSIC))

The elderly woman ushers you inside, once again to the well appointed sitting room. The raven eyes you in that way ravens do from its perch.

Melu smiles back, allowing herself to be ushered by the older woman.

"Thank you, tea sounds lovely. I thought I'd come back without the noisy pack of well-meaning adventurers I seem to have fallen in with. They're nice but, I have been separated from my family for....a long time."

She eyes the raven, but in a friendly, appraising manner.

"Oh you poor dear, not a year goes by that we don't lose someone to bandits or monsters. Have a seat and I'll fix your cup."

Koya heads into the kitchen to fix the tea, leaving you in the sitting room. The slightest of creaks betrays the arrival of her mother.

"Ah, so you have returned, child, and alone. Have you come to tell us your story?"

She walks past you, smelling strongly of incense, to sit in the large chair near the fireplace. As she does, the raven flits over to perch by her hand.

Melu curtsies to Madame

Melu curtsies to Madame Mvashti as she enters, waiting until the elder sits to take a seat herself.

"What I can tell, m'am," Melu answers, unconsciously running a finger along the collar of her sapphire necklace.

She waits until Koya returns to say anything further.

"Awhile ago, we were forced to change our usual route. I was...getting water and I heard the caravan attacked. it was...awful. I managed to get away, and ended up playing for my supper in little villages as I made my way to familiar places. Now I'm here looking for some of my relatives.

"My Aunt Iesha--I was told once I look a lot like her--her family's caravan comes near here, I think. I haven't seen her since I was little, though. My older brother Rigo ran away a few years ago, he might be in Magnimar. But I don't know. I just...I miss being around my own kind."

Melu shrugs and smiles. "Really, I'm just glad to be in a place so welcoming to Varisians, compared to some others. If there's anything you need done, anything I can help with, I'd be happy to lend what aid I can. I might be here for quite some time."

Koya crosses her legs, and taps her chin as she thinks.

"Iesha... Iesha... oh yes, from the Veldin caravan. Last we heard, she'd married a Chelaxian noble and was living in a manor house somewhere south of here. Hard to keep track of all the rich folk building big houses along the coast, they're a copper a dozen."

"As far as help is concerned, there's always chores to be done. I still haven't done my shopping for the day, and mother is always on the look out for various herbs and other components for her work. We'll find something to fill your days, don't you worry. Besides, you're already better off than many refugees who come through here. Your friends are lively, if a bit dim."

Melu files that information

Melu files that information away for later; time to look up her aunt later. She nods. "Thank you, I'm sure I'll find my way down the coast eventually. Right now, we're staying in town while the sheriff's away, getting help from the city. He seems to think my...friends can help keep the townsfolk calm and the town safe. Which...well, I'd have to agree with your assessment, ma'am. They're very sweet, really."

She smiles brightly. "After finding a dress for a fussy ifreeti nomad who prefers armor and axes, I'm sure some household shopping and herbing will be nearly a treat."

"Well then, have a good day

"Well then, have a good day around town. I'll stay here and keep the children away from the pie."

Map o' Sandpoint

The old woman chuckles as Koya grabs her satchel and ushers you out to Sandpoint, off on errands. You head southeast towards the docks, where Koya points out the Fatman's Feedbag (42)"a den of ruffians, best to stay clear" on the way to Hannah's (45). Inside she introduces you to Hannah Velerin, one of Sandpoint's few elves.

"Hannah here is the town's midwife, as well as the doctor for those who don't want to visit that big bloody edifice filled with stuffed robes. She can also help you youngin's with your urges to make sure you don't come with child 'fore you're good and ready!"

"Koya's... bluntness aside, I do indeed do what I can to help. I find that young people of any race are eager to experience the world, and it does no one any good if parenthood comes before they are ready. I also provide many other types of medicine, like this ointment for Koya's-"

"Shush girl, this young'in doesn't want to hear about my old lady problems. You have a lovely day."

Melu: On a Tour!

Melu tries not to giggle over the exchange; it has the sound of people long familiar with one another, for one thing.

"It's nice to meet you, ma'am, I'll be sure to look in. I prefer something like this to a big stone temple myself, nice as it is."

She simply takes the mysterious ointment and anything else Koya picks up at the doctor's and smiles cheerfully at the elf as she follows Koya on to the next place on their tour.

Koya leads you up Rum street

Koya leads you up Rum street towards market street, pointing out the various points of interest, starting with the Feathered Serpent, a quaint little shop who's proprieter, a long, dark-haired human, is enjoying a smoke on the front stoop. Upon seeing you, he bows with a flourish, waving his hand around to make the word "Welcome" from the smoke trail, likely aided by the magical spell surrounding one of his hands.

"Greetings and Salutations lady Koya. Showing your girl around are you? Fascinating and wonderful, be sure to stop by if you are interested in relics both magical and historical!"

"That's Vorvashali Voon. He's as showy as one of those traveling wizards, but he does a brisk business with rare items and magic. Just don't let him try and tell you a story, or you won't get away until you look like me!"

Koya laughs at her joke, leading you down Market, to the building across from the Rusty Dragon, which she enters. The store appears to sell all kinds of things, clothing toys, artwork, tools, and even some weapons for sale. Some are imported, but most are Varisian, and the shop is decorated in a Varisian style, with many colourful rugs and beads giving the storefront a cozy feeling.

"This here's the Boutique. Hayliss runs it, and she's the most honest person in Sandpoint."

"At least where Scarnetti villainy is concerned at least. You're one of the new heroes, aren't you? Good on you girl, show them we Varisians aren't just pretty faces and beadwork. If you need something to remind you of home, you just come by. I even get some magic stuff once in a while, if you have the coin."

Melu smiles politely at the magic shop owner, noting the place to let Solberg know later; seems the kind of place a sorceror might be interested in.

"Well, I hope to look half as good as you, if I get caught in such a story," she tells Koya as they make their way into the Varisian boutique. She takes a deep breath, as even the smells in the place feel 'right' and she runs her fingers over the rugs, scarves, and through strings of beads.

"I will most definitely keep this place in mind. Maybe I can spruce up my performance outfit soon, it's feeling a little shabby."

You leave the boutique and backtrack to head up Riverstreet, passing the brewery (39), the grain mill (32), the lumber mill (25), and the smithy where Telian used to work (15), earning a dirty look from the blacksmith as you pass, which Koya ignores utterly. She leads you to a little, out of the way tavern (13) called Risa's place.

"This here's Risa's place. Risa's an old bitty like I am, but she's gone nearly blind, so her youngins run the place. This is a good place to relax, you won't see many strangers here."

"Besk Magravi, at your service. Lookin' for some spiced potatoes?"

"Not right this minute dearie, just showing young Melusina around. Tell your mother I'll be by tonight for tea."

Melu tries to ignore the glower as they pass the smithy, but once out of Korvut's sight, she shivers a little. She holds back any comment, though. He's not really worth it.

She takes in the atmosphere of Risa's tavern, feeling more familiarity in the place. "Seems like quite a lot of our people have settled permanently in Sandpoint," she says.

"You're too young to

"You're too young to remember, but before the outlanders settled here, the Old Light was one of our meeting grounds, where the caravans would gather and sing praise to Desna, as well as let our young folk find themselves wives and husbands."

The old lady chuckles at the thought, pushing her hair back in a very girly fashion as she thinks back to her own youth.

"Ah, but then the outlanders came, looking to build their towns. And it's gone well enough at this point, though there was a rocky start. After that though, they knew to respect our ways. That's why they built mother her house when she asked, her bones had gotten too old for constant travel. It's better for her than the wagons. Ah, here's our next stop!"

You look around as she stops, seeing nothing but tenements and long grass. Nothing stands out, save a small painting of a pillbug perched on a mushroom above the door that Koya just opened, revelaing a crowded shop whose shelves are filled with potion bottles and a wide variety of dried and fresh herbs. Behind the counter is a rotund man who's losing his hair.

"Good day, miss Mvashti. What'll it be today?"

"Three bushels of snakeroot, and an introduction. Melusina, this is Pillbug Podiker. He's the man to see for potions and herbs. His mother was from the North Wind caravan, so he looks out for us."

"It's Aliver Podiker, ma'am. And miss Mvashti speaks true, discounts for my Varisian brothers and sisters. Especially if it keeps you away from Bottled Solutions down on Raven Street, Tander isn't as good as he thinks he is."

"I think my caravan came

"I think my caravan came through here before, when I was a child. That was a long time ago, though," Melu admits, puzzled at the sudden stop, until Koya enters the tiny shop. The bard looks around the wares stuffed into the tiny space, her nose twitching at the various scents hanging in the air of such a place; she may not be able to stay long, but it's fascinating!

"Pleased to meet you, sir. I'll keep it in mind; my friends might be interested in your wares as well. A good potion goes a long way, it's said."

Melu waits while Koya's purchases are gathered, wondering where they'll go next. She's certainly fulfilling the "be seen around town" aspect of the sheriff's wishes! The meeting so many other Varisians is the most fun part, though. Keeping names straight will be the trick, as she goes over the list so far in her head. It's a poor bard who can't figure out simple memorization and keeping facts (mostly) straight.

Koya leads you back out to

Koya leads you back out to tower street, heading towards main, pointing out a few of the shops on the way, including Savah's Armory (12) which sells weapons and armor, including exotic such things; the book shop (22) called the Curious Goblin, which sells books of nearly every type and description, though for fairly high prices; and the Tundarok Academy, located just across from the general store (27 and 26 respectively), where the youth of sandpoint go for book learnin', as well as an orphanage for those kids who lost their parents.

"It's a chelaxian school, a wizard academy, and an orphanage all rolled up into one. Not sure I agree with cagin' youngin's during the day, but I suppose it keeps the older ones from having enough free time on their hands to start any real trouble."

You duck into the general store for a small bag of flour, then head towards the meat market (36) for Koya's final stop, picking up a few cuts of venison for the evening meal. Finally, you return to the old women's home, dropping off all your shopping.

"Well, I must say it's been marvelous to have you along today, girl. If you like, you can stay and help me with supper, and you can eat with mother and I? Assumin' you don't need to be runnin' off on some adventure."

Melu sighs as they finish

Melu sighs as they finish their tour and return to the manor house. The Academy is a curiosity, for sure, and she wonders what sort of knowledge they have kept in there. The idea of being stuck in a building all day as a kid makes her shiver a little though.

She rubs the back of her neck and shakes her head as she helps put away the groceries.

"Nothing that I know of; I'm certain someone would run and find me if there was a problem. Though to be honest, I'm not all that good in a fight; I mostly help the others and provide extra healing as needed.

"I'd love to stay for supper, if that's all right. No offense to Ameiko's cooking, but I can only take so much spice!"

Dinner proceeds well, with small talk and varisian folk tales flowing as freely as the cups of tea. You finally leave the home as Koya and her mother begin to prepare for bed, returning to your room at the Rusty Dragon, feeling full and satisfied at a day well spent.

(Stay tuned for the next chapter in the adventure later today!)
