Following Up: An Apology

I had just told Curlaina to send Doran in after our talk. With my mind so heavy, I had almost forgotten before she rounded the corner. I sat waiting in my chair, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. Of course I had left him a note, but I needed to say it to him as well. I owed him that.

I look up at Doran, as I hear his footsteps close in. Calmly, I stand and start. "How are you doing since last week?"

"Fine I suppose... got your letter." He responds.

I nod. "I just wanted to follow up in person and tell you that I'm really sorry about how that all went down. I got really emotional when I could have handled it better... It's just been a hard few months, and I hope you can forgive me."

"Yeah... I can forgive ya." He replies.

I nod and pause briefly. "Me and Curlaina will be at the inn for breakfast in the morning. Going to see if this is a job she can handle, and if not then I'll find another way. I certainly don't want to burden her with something she isn't ready for."

He nods. "Well I'll make sure you've both got a good breakfast in ya... Hopefully to help in both your endeavors."

A few looks are exchanged before I continue. "Also, I may take a few days and go to see Kistra and Gentharus in Darnassus. Electra is gone often since I took back over, so I'd be leaving it to you to watch over things for me."

"Me?" He asks a bit surprised.

I simply nod. "You are consistently here most of the time, and you have a good sense for things. I just need some time to get my head straight and take some steps back to breathe."

"Don't really know about that second part... but I'll do my best." He shrugs and nods.

"Well, I trust you..." I pause briefly. "Also at some point, I've been thinking of taking a look up north and I need someone to go with. Do you think you would be up for that?"

"Probably... whereabouts up north?" He raises an eyebrow.

I think a moment before listing off things in my head. "Hillsbrad, the Hinterlands, the Plaguelands a bit within reason, as well as Gilneas in that regard. Perhaps we can find something that will give us a lead or two... It's better than sitting on our hands and waiting."

"Gilneas is gonna be the worst of it by far... Gonna be pretty dangerous." He adds.

"That's why I need someone who knows the area better than I do." I start. "I want to revisit the area Amelia was taken. I feel like we are missing something..."

I sigh and look away in thought. The room goes silent for a good while.

I turn back to him with an honest and sincere look. "One last thing... I know we have been having some uncomfortable moments lately, but I do want you to know I still care about you alot... I need to take a step back and let our friendship get re-established first before anything else. What I need most is a good friend who understands me, and I think it might be best to keep things simple for a while... How do you feel about it?"

"Yeah... and if we're putting cards out, I still care too... and I wanna try and keep helping as I can."

I nod slowly, holding emotions in check. "I've just... It's been a crazy year for me... And I want to put the breaks on for a while and just let life come to me. I want to do things the right way, because I keep doing something wrong and it keeps putting me back to square one and hurt every time... So... maybe we can start over as friends. That's what is important anyways, right?... And I feel like you understand the vision here in the league."

The room goes silent again as we both appear to be thinking about our words carefully.

I sigh and add. "Also, if I'm talking too much, just tell me to hush. I'm just trying to get everything out because I want to be free from carrying the burden with me, day in and day out."

"No-no, it's okay. I understand. I agree... bonds are what's important." He finally responds.

I nod and ask after a brief pause. "Is there anything else you have for me?"

"Nah, I'm good... Gonna write down some stuff, so the inn gets along alright while we're gone."

I nod again. "I've still got shipments coming in from Pandaria for us as well. If you need anything specific stocked up, just let me know. I'll pass the word along."

He nods. "Alright... See you in the morning then."

I slowly walk over and look up at him. "Can I still have a hug?" I smile a bit.

He returns the small smile. "Sure."

We exchange a warm, but moderately brief hug.

I look back up to him briefly. "Thank you for forgiving me. I know I need to be doing better, and I will... and we really need to get Amelia back. I think it will help us all out."

"Yeah... hoping so. G'night." He adds with a bit of a smile.

"Have a good night, Doran. And... Keep your blades sharp." I smile a bit in thought. "Or claws... We'll go claws for you."

"Yeah." he smiles.
