"Well, we could try to use that rumor mill. Maybe get it spread around that the town 'heroes' are here to stay? And perhaps that you were ahead of schedule because. . . " Galruin pauses for a second then turns to the group. "I dunno, help me out guys."

Shalelu smirks at Telian's comment.

"Nice to be appreciated, especially by someone else who knows how to skewer a goblin."

The sheriff moves to the door.

"Well, if that's all decided, I'll be heading out. Thank you for this, friends, your help is greatly appreciated. Hopefully, I'll see you all next week. Now lets let the mayor get back to her work."

Xoe smiles at the beautiful elven woman.

"We will gladly take care of the town while you're gone, Sheriff. It really is unfortunate you can't stay longer, Shalelu. I would have relished the opportunity to get to know you better."

"I'm not leaving right this minute; I intend to stop by the Dragon and resupply before heading out. Why don't we head over there, I wasn't kidding when I said I wanted to hear about the festival attack from your perspective."

The elf woman heads out of the building, heading down the street towards the Rusty Dragon.

Tel falls into step toward the front of the group, checking his bow and blades to make sure everything's set. Standing out in the middle of town didn't sound like a great job for him, but he'd do it, especially since things got just a bit more interesting...

"Well, from our perspective

"Well, from our perspective the day started normally enough. Festival, food, meeting other people and each other at the vendors and games," Melu musses. "It seems like so much has happened since then..." The Varisian bard shakes her head and smiles.

"When the goblins came during the evening ceremonies, most people scattered. The nasty little beasts had warsingers with them I tried to drown out. Zia seemed to take the brunt of the injuries, keeping the mongrels distracted while the others fought. I mostly tried to stay out of the way and offer support while the rest of the gang here did the actual fighting." She pauses and grimaces. "Well, there was the spell I cast on the end, on the dog after Zia shrunk the raid leader...Is he still in the jail?"

If Shalelu insists, Melu will give a more detailed account of each member's contributions to the battle, playing everyone (except herself) up a little.

Galruin follows the group out the door toward the dragon, sticking to the back of the group.

"Haha, Yeah, that last goblin rider had it the worst I think!" He chuckles for a second after Melu's short recount.

Shameless Exposition Dump

You return to the Dragon, where Shalelu and Ameiko embrace as old friends. Before long, you are telling the story of the festival, stopping occasionally when Shalelu presses you for details here and there. When the story is complete, Shalelu nods her head.

"It's a good thing for Sandpoint that the six of you were willing to step up. That many goblins at once could have caused a lot more carnage. And what you told me about the crypt just makes me even more certain someone is using the goblins to some greater end. Here, why don't I fill you in."

She pulls a worn map from her pack, spreading it out on the table, weighing down the corners with three mugs and a bowl.

"These are the territories of the five tribes in the region. Closest are the Birdcrunchers, who live in caves on the western edge of the Devil's Platter. Despite their proximity, they're the least troublesome. Their leader recently died in a rockslide, so they're even more internally focused than normal."

"South of them are the Brinestumps, little pests that are strong swimmers. There are two goblins of note there. The first is their chieftain, Rendwattle. He's an old, fat, one-eyed little bastard who has the tribe convinced that he's some sort of demigod."

"The other is Vorka. He's a rotten monster and a cannibal who preys on the Brinestump tribe. I've tried to find his lair, but he moves around a lot. Thankfully, he seems to prefer hunting other goblins than troubling civilized folk."

"East of here are the Seven Tooth goblins who live in Shank's wood. They're strong because they raid Sandpoint's dump for refuse, turning the town's garbage into armor, weapons, and tools. Their strongest was Korovus, a strong warrior who somehow got his hands on a magical longsword. One of the goblins I interrogated was from that tribe, and he says Korovus has been missing for months, searching for some secret hideout on the cliffs."

"Further south, here on the eastern edge of the map, is the largest tribe, the Mosswoods. Despite their size, they're not the most dangerous, as they have a fair amount of internal strife from feuding families. The only goblin of note there is Big Gugmut, a goblin who's almost as tall as you, Zia. Never run in to him myself, but the mosswood goblins all tell his story, and they're similar enough to have some truth to them."

"The last tribe is the Thistletop tribe. They're set up in Nettlewood, an aptly named old growth forest with a great deal of briars and nettles clogging the ground. Their clanhold is an island off the northern coast, a rock that looks like a face from the right angle. Their chieftain is Ripnugget, a slimy little bastard who's good at keeping his tribe in order.

Shalelu takes a deep breath before continuing.

"There's one more major goblin threat, but he's no part of any tribe. He's a bugbear named Bruthazmus, and probably the most dangerous being in the entire region. He's huge, silent, and an utter psychopath.

"He follows no creed but causing pain in others. He's a serial killer, hunting sentients down, killing them in terrible ways, and seeking to spread suffering to everyone he meets. Sometimes he trades with the goblin tribes, others he just slaughters his way to whatever they have that he wants. The goblins live in fear and awe of him, but for those of us who are civilized, he's the greatest enemy the region has."

"I've had run ins with him before. Once I caught him trying to murder a merchant. I saved the man, but Bruthazmus escaped. Twice since then he's ambushed me, and both times I barely escaped with my life. He's quieter than any bugbear I've ever seen, and far smarter than he has any right to be. I've tried to turn the tables on him, but each time he's managed to slip away before I can tighten the noose."

Shalelu sits back, blowing hair out of her face in a very non-graceful, non-elvish manner.

"Well, that's the basics. Anything else you wanted to talk about?"

"That's quite a lot of information," Melu says, looking over the map and turning over Shalelu's intel in her mind.

"It's really too bad we can't go out ourselves right now and follow up on one of these.. it's an opportunity wasted."

Tel looks over the map with a focus and intensity that runs extremely contrary to his somewhat passive, easygoing, not willing to attract attention to oneself behavior. Something's lit a fire under the elf.

"The sheriff wants you here

"The sheriff wants you here in town, and with good reason. We can't take the risk that the goblins will attack and find Sandpoint under-defended before Belor returns with the extra soldiers. If I find anything out there, I'll be sure to head back and let you all know what the score is. Whatever it is, it's probably too big for me to stop alone."

"She's right, we have our own work to do here, making sure the town stays safe. Shalelu can find out more for sure, and by the time the Sheriff gets back, we can worry about the goblins with plenty of help. For now, though, business as usual. No need to start a panic."

"That's got me thinking,

"That's got me thinking, though," Solberg adds. "Six of us to cover the town might spread things a little thin. If we're all at one end and the goblins arrive at the other, that's trouble. On the other side of the coin, if we're all split apart whichever one of us catches them might be overwhelmed, along with whatever local guardsmen happen to be around at the time."

He then asks, "Maybe it'll be worth finding a good middle ground between the two?"

"I think you may be overthinking this, friend. If the goblins do attack the town, there will be an alarm before long. I'd expect that by that point everyone will be fighting for their lives, and you'll be doing the same, though likely with greater effect. Worse comes to worse, the other defenders will be heartened to have you at their side."

"The lovely woman is right, Birdman. We can post the guards, do patrolls if need be. The alarm will be raised and we'll all come running. The town isn't THAT big."

"On another note, how long do you plan to stay in town, my dear? Perhaps, since you are more familiar with the region, you could help me familiarize myself?" Xoe flashes the elf woman a dazzling smile, putting on his best charm.

Skipper squawks with indignance at Xoe - then starts mimicking chuckling sounds instead. The gunslinger totally got shot down.

Solberg, for his part, is apologetic for his bird. "...Alright, I'm picking all your favourite nuts out of dinner tonight."

He turns to Shalelu afterwards, and gives her a nod. "Thanks for the information, and my apologies for my inexperience. I never thought I'd be making a career out of blasting goblins."

"As far as being seen around town and keeping the peoples spirits lifted I am sure there are small jobs we can avail ourselves too. In fact I was gonna go talk to father zantius about assisting with the injured and sick around town, perhaps set up a small clinic?"

"Not a bad idea, but maybe

"Not a bad idea, but maybe ask the Father about any clinics that already exist; in a town this size, I'm pretty sure there're already local healers, and you don't want to step on any toes--but they might like the help," Melu says, smiling at Galruin.

"At least there's a reason to go poking around more shops and restaurants, see more of the town, though I have a few things I'd like to do as well, and being seen out and about will add to that."

Melu toys with her long dark braid as she ponders. "I should see if the Mvashtis have any errands they need run, actually; I bet they'd appreciate some help around the...house."

That's still a little weird to the Varisian, though understandable with as old as both women are, especially Madame Mvashti herself.

"The great thing about goblin

"The great thing about goblin hunting is that you'll never find yourself short of work, kid." The elf-woman smirks as she responds to Solberg's timidness. "It looks like you'll be able to figure it out. I'm going to do some resupplying before I head out along the coast. Stay alive, heroes."

The good thing about

The good thing about Sandpoint, is that there's -always- some kind of work that needs to be done. In particular there was alot of general smithing work that Korvus tended to be either too lazy, too proud, or too drunk to get his cranky human butt around town to do, especially after the goblin attack and Telian planned on exploiting those qualities in the smith. So first he'd travel around town and see about acquiring tools that he would need, and then going arounding and finding any kind of work that played to his skills for gold and profit!

(( So.. knowledge local or somesuch?.. Figured I'd take 10 on it and get a 16? ))

Solberg: Day Off 1

Solberg takes a moment to properly thank Ameiko for the lodgings, services and the like that the group has been given since their encounter with the goblins. She's going out of her way to make him and those he's fallen in with welcome, the least he can do is to let her know he really appreciates it, though sooner or later he'll have to start paying again like an ordinary tenant of the building.

Also, he's sure to pick up more nuts to give to Skipper later, Solberg plans on a busy day and won't have time to buy more later!

With the day ahead of him, Solberg then heads off to meet with Quink, if the man will see him! He'd like to check on the robe Quink's been working with, and then offer his own services with any other paperwork or research the man may have needing to be done.

(Taking 10 on Knowledge (History) for a total of 16 to assist Quink with any pending research, for gold.)

Downtime!

Telian

The first thing a freelance fixer needs is proper tools, and you've never really had any to call your own. Das always provided the tools you needed for your work, and until recently, that providence wasn't ballistic. However, this week has had many firsts in it. As such, you head on over to the general store, where Katrine is running the front. She smiles pleasantly as you explain what you're looking for, and after a bit of digging, manage to put together a respectable tool belt. If you want it, it will set you back five gold coins (you currently have 12 gold, 9 silver, and 10 copper to your name).

Regardless, after that trip you start poking around town, looking to see who needs work done, and run into Daviren Hosk, owner of the stables. He has a few tools in need of repair to the metalwork, and apparantly Das has too many projects to get it done as fast as Daviren would like. So, he gives you the job, paying you a bit up front. You gain 1 gold, 6 silver as you set down in the stables to repair the stablemaster's tools.

Solberg

Ameiko smirks and slaps you on the back, telling you that if you're so grateful, you'll put together an epic story to tell her later as she wraps up some candied nuts in a small pouch for you.

Sage Quink is happy to have a visitor, and his face brightens when you explain that you're looking to provide him some assistance. He turns out to be a bit of a task master, and the work is a little bit mind-numbing, but in addition to the coin he pays you he also provides a tasty lunch of freshly baked salmon. You gain 1 gold, 6 silver for the day's work, with Brodert inviting you back to help "whenever you aren't saving us all from tiny, toothy evil!"

As far as the cloak, Quink has good news. While he is no wizard himself, he has studied magic items extensively, and picked up a few tricks for modifying enchantments.

"Just a little bit of holy water from the cathedral to cleanse away the necromancy, and some basilik's blood from mister Tander down at Bottled Solutions to repurpose the enchantment, and I have turned it into a servicable travel robe. The enchantments will now protect the wearer from heat and cold, making things comfy and cozy no matter how miserable nature may be. Now, since you young folks were so helpful, I'm willing to offer it back to you for the cost of the materials, so it's yours if you can bring me fifty gold coins. If you find any other magical items, I may be able to repurpose them as well! And if I can't, well, I'm on good terms with the other intellectuals in town, and I'm sure we can manage whatever you need."

((The robe is now a Robe of Weathered Comfort, which protects the wearer as though they had Endure Elements cast on them at all times. The robe itself is a plain, dark grey robe with a rope belt and a hood, suitable for travel, sitting in the dark corner of an inn, or joining a creepy cult that hasn't put in a proper uniform code. Brodert will keep it available at its current price for any of the six of you. While he isn't a wizard, he is able to craft wondrous items thanks to his feats, and will happily use these skills for you at standard prices from here on out.))

Zia

A little bit of asking around brings you to the Jeweler's shop just west of Cathedral Square (5 on the map). There's a fair bit of fire damage to the roof, and the owner, Maver Kesk, is more than willing to accept your aid. After a few minutes of work makes it clear that you're not used to this, he slips into the position of foreman, directing your strength into the repair work, and progress beings to occur. By the end of the day, you're tired, but have an odd feeling at seeing something you -made- standing proud, as well as a gold and a silver coin for your hard work.

Xoe

You join the patrol with the town guards, meeting guardsmen Cole and Kesk, who is the son of the owner of the jeweller's shop. The day is quiet, with the patrol being slowed by people coming by to see you, as well as no less than three appearances by Shayliss, blowing you kisses. The most exciting thing is when you get to climb on top of Tundarok Academy (27) to bring a foolish young student down, after she got stuck up there following a mis-cast jump spell. You are given some coin at the end of the day, guardsman Cole explaining that the sheriff keeps a fund handy for paying adventurers for their hard work, and "climbing the wall of a two-story building counts as hard work."

Galruin

In a community the size of Sandpoint, there are always ills to be treated by the faithful. Luckily, none of them are so severe as to require the intervention of glorious Sarenrae to heal, instead working with bandages and medicine to treat the sick and injured. One of the men you treat for a twisted ankle is so grateful, that he promises that if you need anything moved, dug, or carried, he'll be your man. You gain 1 point of labor capital.
